Unique work.
Created in 2014, Spock Pixel Remix marks the introduction of a new level of resolution within PixelArt’s mosaic practice. Developed using rare 1 × 1 cm Venetian tesserae that had only recently become available, the work expanded the possibilities of pixel-based reconstruction and allowed for significantly greater image definition than previous mosaics.
Constructed from approximately 3,600 individually placed tesserae, the portrait reinterprets one of science fiction’s most enduring cultural figures. More than a tribute to the Star Trek universe, the work explores the symbolic role of Spock as a character positioned between logic and emotion, humanity and technology, imagination and scientific progress.
Positioned within the broader Pixel Remix series, the mosaic reflects on the persistence of fictional identities within contemporary culture and the ways in which media-generated characters become part of collective memory. Through the translation of a screen-based image into a handcrafted physical structure assembled pixel by pixel, the work reinforces the dialogue between digital imagery, material permanence and cultural transmission.
Created shortly before the passing of Leonard Nimoy, the work also occupies a particular place within the artist’s personal history. The original mosaic was later acquired by a Paris-based collector following international exposure of the artist’s urban interventions, becoming one of the earliest works from the series to enter an international collection.
Original work held in a private collection in Paris.
