Part of the artist’s Musical Heroes series, Robert Smith Pixel Remix pays tribute to one of the most influential visual identities in alternative music and to the graphic culture that surrounded independent music scenes during the 1980s and 1990s.

Created in 2021, the work reconstructs the face of Robert Smith, founder and vocalist of The Cure, through a carefully reduced palette composed of black, white, and three shades of gray. Rather than reproducing the vibrant color language commonly associated with contemporary media, the piece embraces the aesthetic of music magazines, photocopied fanzines, concert photography, and underground publications that circulated long before the digital era.

For the artist, these monochromatic images were often more powerful than color photographs. A single black-and-white portrait on a magazine cover could define an entire musical universe. Posters were collected, pages were cut out, walls became archives of inspiration, and photography became inseparable from the experience of discovering music.

Using hundreds of hand-placed Venetian glass tesserae, the mosaic transforms photographic grain into physical pixels. The restricted tonal palette creates a remarkable sense of depth while reinforcing the emotional atmosphere associated with Robert Smith’s image: introspection, melancholy, mystery, and timeless elegance.

The work also reflects a recurring interest throughout the artist’s practice: the ability of limited visual information to generate powerful recognition. Just as early fanzines relied on a few shades of ink to communicate entire worlds, this mosaic demonstrates how reduction can become a source of visual intensity.

The original piece has already been acquired by a collector, with additional editions available by commission as part of a limited series of five.
