KANAGAWA PIXEL REMIX Venetian Mosaic · 100×80 cm · 2020

US$3.000

Limited Edition • Private Collections

One of the most recognizable images in art history reinterpreted through the language of the pixel.

Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s legendary The Great Wave off Kanagawa, this work transforms a nineteenth-century masterpiece into a contemporary mosaic constructed pixel by pixel using individually placed Venetian glass tesserae. The result is a dialogue between Japanese printmaking, digital aesthetics, and the enduring power of visual reproduction.

Created in 2020, shortly after the artist relocated to the Chilean coast, the piece also reflects a personal connection with the ocean. The wave becomes more than an art historical reference; it becomes a daily presence, a symbol of movement, impermanence, and natural force.

Rather than replicating Hokusai’s original palette, the work introduces a vibrant chromatic reinterpretation that amplifies the energy of the composition. Through geometric reduction and material translation, the image oscillates between abstraction and recognition, revealing itself differently depending on the viewing distance.

Part of the artist’s ongoing Pixel Remix series, Kanagawa Pixel Remix explores how iconic images survive across centuries, technologies, and cultural contexts. From woodblock printing to digital pixels, from Japan to South America, the wave continues its journey through new visual languages.
