A tribute to one of the most transformative figures in contemporary culture. In this 2020 work, David Bowie is reconstructed through a vibrant mosaic grid that merges the language of Pop Art, digital aesthetics, and handcrafted Venetian mosaic.

Constructed pixel by pixel using 1,600 individually placed glass tesserae, the piece belongs to a significant transitional period in the artist’s practice. Unlike later works produced from fully color-coded matrices, this mosaic was created using the artist’s original working method: a monochromatic pixel matrix interpreted manually through the placement of color. Each tessera was selected according to light, contrast, and visual intuition, making the work both a portrait and a demonstration of artistic decision-making.

The subject is particularly meaningful within the Pixel Remix series. Bowie was an artist who consistently embraced technological change, experimentation, and reinvention. His influence parallels the emergence of domestic digital culture during the 1970s and 1980s, when personal computers, video game consoles, and new visual systems introduced the pixel as a defining element of contemporary imagery.

Through mosaic, Bowie is transformed into a permanent structure of color and geometry, connecting the experimental spirit of his music and persona with the visual language of the digital age. The result is a portrait that oscillates between nostalgia and futurism, much like Bowie himself.
