A portrait built entirely from light.
Part of the Latent Images series, Vincent Drop Shadow revisits one of the most influential figures in art history through a medium where the image exists only as a consequence of illumination. Using the artist’s proprietary Drop Shadow technique, Vincent van Gogh’s portrait emerges without ink, pigment, or printed marks, appearing solely through the shadows cast by precisely cut paper structures.
The work transforms the pixel into a physical event. Each cut acts as a unit of information, generating tonal values through light rather than color. As viewing conditions change throughout the day, the portrait continuously shifts, revealing different levels of depth, contrast, and expression.
This piece also occupies a special place within the artist’s trajectory. While Vincent Pixel Remix marked the beginning of the mosaic investigations in 2012, Vincent Drop Shadow represents a later stage of research, where the image is no longer constructed through colored tesserae but through absence, shadow, and perception.
The first piece from this edition was acquired in Paris in 2019 during a joint exhibition with renowned muralist Fabio Rieti.
