A portrait constructed entirely through light and shadow.
Part of the Latent Images series, Bowie Drop Shadow reinterprets one of the most influential cultural icons of the twentieth century through the artist’s proprietary Drop Shadow technique. Rejecting pigment, ink, and printed imagery, the portrait emerges exclusively through a complex system of hand-cut paper structures that transform light into image.
Each unit is individually produced by the artist, translating the logic of the pixel into a sculptural surface where information is generated through depth rather than color. As ambient light changes throughout the day, the portrait continuously shifts between appearance and disappearance, creating a dynamic visual experience that depends on the viewer’s position and surrounding conditions.
The work reflects an ongoing investigation into perception, image construction, and material translation. While earlier projects explored the pixel through Venetian mosaic and urban interventions, the Drop Shadow series reduces the image to its essential elements: absence, light, and perception.
The first piece from this edition was acquired in Paris in 2019 during the artist’s exhibition honoring master muralist Fabio Rieti and is now held in a French private collection.
