A cultural icon reconstructed through light, shadow, and absence.

Part of the Latent Images series, Tom Drop Shadow reinterprets the visual legacy of Tom of Finland through the artist’s proprietary Drop Shadow technique. By eliminating pigment entirely, the image emerges solely through the interaction between light and a precisely engineered paper structure, transforming a historically graphic image into a sculptural and perceptual experience.

Each piece is individually cut and assembled by hand. Rather than printing an image, the artist constructs a system where every unit functions as a pixel of shadow, generating depth, contrast, and form through ambient illumination. As lighting conditions change, the portrait continuously shifts between visibility and disappearance, emphasizing the transient nature of perception itself.

The work extends the artist’s ongoing investigation into how images can survive translation between media. What began as drawing becomes relief; what was once defined by line becomes defined by absence. The result is an image that exists not on the surface, but in the space between material and light.

Like other works within the Latent Images series, Tom Drop Shadow explores the relationship between identity, reproduction, and visual memory, transforming an iconic cultural figure into a dynamic image activated by its environment.
