A significant work within the artist’s ongoing exploration of cultural icons and art history. Created in 2022, The Starry Night Pixel Remix reinterprets one of the most recognizable paintings ever created, translating Vincent van Gogh’s celebrated masterpiece into the language of contemporary pixel art and Venetian mosaic.

Constructed from approximately 2,000 individually placed glass tesserae, the work transforms Van Gogh’s swirling skies and luminous stars into a structured grid of physical pixels. The energetic movement of the original painting is preserved while simultaneously being reconstructed through the logic of digital image-making.

The piece is also deeply connected to the artist’s personal experience. During his years living in France, a visit to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam left a lasting impression that would later influence several works dedicated to the Dutch master. Beyond reproductions, books, or screens, encountering the original paintings revealed a physical intensity of color and emotion that remains impossible to fully capture through photography.

This work continues a recurring theme throughout the artist’s practice: the transformation of universally recognized images into contemporary visual systems. Just as Van Gogh’s painting has transcended museums to become part of global popular culture, The Starry Night Pixel Remix explores how iconic artworks survive, evolve, and acquire new meanings in the digital age.

Like many works in the Pixel Remix series, perception changes according to distance. Viewed up close, the viewer encounters the material reality of the mosaic. From afar, the image resolves into a familiar masterpiece. Through a smartphone camera, the work often appears with increased clarity, reinforcing the artist’s ongoing investigation into the role of technology as a mediator of visual experience.
