Inspired by the dune fields of Concón, Dunas translates the landscape of the Chilean coast into a language of geometry, rhythm, and optical movement. Created shortly after the artist relocated to the region, the work reflects an ongoing fascination with the natural forms that define the surrounding environment.

Constructed pixel by pixel using individually placed Venetian glass tesserae, the composition reduces the landscape to its essential elements. Three fragmented undulating bands flow across the surface, suggesting the continuous dialogue between sand, ocean, and sky. Rather than depicting the dunes directly, the work captures their underlying structure and movement.

Part of the artist’s kinetic abstraction research, Dunas expands upon traditional optical art strategies by combining geometric fragmentation with organic forms found in nature. The flowing curves generate subtle visual oscillations that shift according to distance and viewing angle, creating a dynamic relationship between the viewer and the work.

While rooted in observation of the local landscape, the piece avoids literal representation. Instead, it transforms a specific geographical location into a universal exploration of rhythm, balance, and visual perception.

Created as one of a series of kinetic mosaic investigations developed during 2021, Dunas stands as a unique work that bridges digital design, contemporary abstraction, and the physical permanence of Venetian mosaic.
