Extreme Visual Compression
Chile Jazz Festival 2018
Invited to participate in the national competition for the visual identity of Chile Jazz Festival 2018, PixelArt’s proposal was selected as the official image of the event.
Developed through a strictly pixel-based visual language, the project expanded beyond poster design into a complete communication system deployed across printed materials, merchandise, digital platforms and public-facing media.

Rather than redesigning the image, the system allowed information to migrate across different festival editions while preserving its structural integrity, demonstrating the scalability and flexibility of a highly compressed visual language.
The Chile Jazz Festival identity system emerged from an attempt to translate the structural principles of pixel construction into the field of cultural communication. Rather than using pixelation as a stylistic reference, every visual element was conceived within a fixed digital grid, transforming the entire project into an exercise in systematic image reduction and visual coherence.
The central poster was constructed within a canvas of only 180×240 pixels. Typography, symbols, graphic elements and compositional structures were all designed inside this limited matrix, without relying on vector-based refinement or external graphic resources. With the exception of institutional sponsor logos, every visible component remained constrained to the same pixel architecture, producing a visual system governed by a single set of rules.
Selected as the winning proposal of the festival’s public competition, the project subsequently expanded into a complete communication platform including tickets, stickers, apparel, event programs, digital mailings, website banners and promotional materials. The original image functioned as a generative source capable of maintaining visual consistency across multiple formats while preserving the integrity of its underlying grid.
The resulting identity established a connection between contemporary digital culture and the improvisational nature of jazz. Rhythmic horizontal structures, chromatic variation and modular repetition echoed musical composition while demonstrating how extreme visual constraints can generate complex communicative systems.
Operating simultaneously as graphic design, image research and pixel-based experimentation, the project represents an important extension of the artist’s practice beyond urban intervention and material construction. Here, the pixel becomes not only an aesthetic unit but a communication device capable of organizing information, identity and cultural transmission across diverse media environments.
The work also proposes a provocative paradox: despite existing primarily as a large-format cultural poster, its complete visual information is contained within a remarkably small digital matrix. In this sense, Chile Jazz Festival 2018 can be understood as a study in compression, demonstrating how an entire visual identity can emerge from one of the smallest image systems ever deployed at this scale.
