Created in 2013, Tsunami represents a significant expansion of PixelArt’s research into image systems and computational processes. Developed from a custom JavaScript algorithm designed to simulate the movement of ocean waves, the work became the artist’s first exploration of generative methodologies and one of the earliest instances in which code directly informed the construction of a mosaic composition.
Rather than reproducing an existing image, the piece originated from a set of programmed behaviors translated into a visual matrix and subsequently materialized through 10,000 individually placed Venetian tesserae. The work occupies a unique position between algorithmic generation and handcrafted execution, transforming computational logic into a permanent physical structure assembled pixel by pixel.
Inspired by Chile’s seismic geography and its relationship with natural forces, Tsunami explores the tension between order and unpredictability. The flowing patterns emerge from mathematical systems while simultaneously evoking the movement, energy and instability of the ocean. The result is a visual field where code, nature and material craft converge.
Positioned within the artist’s broader investigation of digital image culture, Tsunami marks the beginning of a dialogue between generative processes and mosaic practice. The work demonstrates how computational systems can extend beyond the screen and become tangible architectural experiences through manual construction and material permanence.
