A pivotal work in the artist’s investigation into computational image-making, optical perception, and machine-assisted drawing. Created in 2025, Shadow Mapping // Plotted Array marks a significant evolution within his plotter practice, introducing ideas that would later become fundamental to his binary mosaic works.
Rather than treating the pixel as an isolated unit, the work explores how information flows through a connected structure. Built from a continuous network of orthogonal paths, the composition transforms the rigid logic of the digital grid into a dynamic visual system where geometry behaves almost like a living organism.
The project emerged from the artist’s use of the plotter as an experimental laboratory for future mosaics. By testing visual structures through drawing before translating them into Venetian glass, the plotter became an essential tool for studying perception, rhythm, and image construction.
Executed with metallic silver marker on black Fabriano paper, the work produces subtle reflections that shift according to the viewer’s position and the surrounding light. These highlights evoke technological circuitry, satellite imaging, and digital mapping systems, reinforcing its connection to contemporary computational aesthetics.
The composition also reflects the artist’s ongoing interest in software archaeology. Developed through workflows rooted in legacy digital tools, the piece preserves methods of image construction that predate contemporary generative platforms. Rather than relying on randomness, every line and intersection is intentionally designed, emphasizing authorship over automation.
Viewed from different distances, the drawing oscillates between abstraction and spatial illusion. Areas of density and interruption generate movement and depth, creating a kinetic experience from a static structure.
