A culminating work within the artist’s exploration of binary systems, optical perception, and computational image construction. Created in 2026, Shadow Mapping investigates one of the most fundamental challenges in digital representation: the simulation of light, depth, and spatial relationships using minimal visual information.
Constructed from 3,600 hand-placed Venetian glass tesserae measuring 1 × 1 cm, the work presents a circular form suspended within a structured field of binary geometry. Through the precise organization of pixel-based vector lines, the composition generates the illusion of a floating object casting a shadow onto the plane beneath it. The result is a visual event that appears simultaneously mathematical and physical, transforming a flat surface into a convincing experience of volume and depth.
The title references a technique widely used in computer graphics to calculate and simulate shadows within virtual environments. By translating this concept into Venetian mosaic, the artist transforms a digital rendering process into a handcrafted physical object, creating a dialogue between ancient material traditions and contemporary computational thinking.
Developed through workflows rooted in legacy software, including methodologies derived from Macromedia Fireworks, the piece continues the artist’s long-term investigation into software archaeology. Historical digital tools become instruments for producing images that feel remarkably contemporary, demonstrating how obsolete technologies can still generate new visual possibilities.
