A key work within the artist’s ongoing investigation into image construction, digital replication, and machine-assisted drawing. Created in 2024, Dali Data Replication [v.01] transforms Salvador Dalí’s iconic face into a sophisticated system of visual information where portraiture emerges from data rather than traditional drawing.
The image results from a controlled process of photographic manipulation, mirrored duplication, pixel reduction, color quantization, geometric substitution, layer separation, and mechanical plotting. Replacing the square pixel with circular units of information, the composition is produced through four precisely registered plotting passes, revealing Dalí’s gaze only from the appropriate viewing distance.
The choice of Dalí is significant. Long before the digital era, he explored fragmented perception and images built from smaller visual units. By translating his portrait into a contemporary system of data replication, the artist creates a dialogue between surrealist experimentation and today’s image-processing technologies.
The work also reflects an interest in the archaeology of software. Developed through workflows rooted in legacy tools such as Macromedia Fireworks, it preserves methods of image construction that have largely disappeared from contemporary practice.
Executed with color markers on archival Canson paper, Dali Data Replication [v.01] occupies a unique position within the artist’s body of work, replacing Venetian mosaic with plotted ink while maintaining the same fundamental concern: how images are encoded, reconstructed, and perceived through technological systems.
Part of a limited edition of twenty, the work marks an important step in the artist’s transition from physical pixel structures toward increasingly sophisticated investigations of data, process, and computational image-making.
