Expresionismo Digital

Presenting Abstract Pixel Systems Beyond Pop Culture

EXHIBITIONS & FEATURES

Presented at Espacio Radicales, an independent cultural venue that played an important role within Santiago’s alternative art scene during the mid-2010s, Expresionismo Digital marked a significant turning point in PixelArt’s artistic trajectory.

Located in the Bellas Artes neighborhood, the space brought together exhibitions, experimental cinema, music and independent creative initiatives, functioning as one of the city’s emerging cultural hubs before its eventual closure.

Rather than exhibiting the pixelated reinterpretations of cultural icons that had already attracted public attention, PixelArt deliberately chose to present a completely different body of work. The exhibition gathered large-scale abstract mosaics produced between 2013 and 2016, revealing an investigation centered on digital perception, structural repetition and emotional states translated through handcrafted pixel systems.

The exhibition included monumental works such as Tsunami and Insert Coin, alongside a series of intimate mosaics constructed from 1 × 1 cm Venetian tesserae. Works including Introspection, Agoraphobia, Claustrophobia, Corporate Captivity, High Voltage and RAM OK / ROM OK explored psychological conditions through geometric fragmentation, modular repetition and material density.

Viewed retrospectively, Expresionismo Digital represents one of the earliest public articulations of the research that continues to define PixelArt’s practice today. Long before concepts such as post-digital materiality or image persistence became central to the artist’s discourse, the exhibition demonstrated an ongoing interest in how digital structures can be transformed into physical systems capable of expressing perception, memory and contemporary human experience.

While PixelArt’s public recognition initially emerged through pixelated reinterpretations of cultural imagery, Expresionismo Digital revealed another dimension of his practice: an investigation into abstraction, perception and the psychological consequences of digital culture. The exhibition established many of the conceptual foundations that would later evolve into the artist’s long-term research on image systems and material pixelation.
