A significant work within the artist’s ongoing exploration of Pixel Stencil Art. Created in 2023, Frida represents the convergence of urban intervention, digital fabrication, and contemporary image-making, bringing one of the most recognizable figures in art history into the visual language of the pixel.
Produced using a precision-cut stencil generated through plotter technology, the work reflects a pivotal moment in the artist’s technical evolution. After years of manually cutting pixel-based stencils, digital tools allowed for a new level of accuracy while preserving the immediacy and energy of spray paint. The resulting image balances mechanical precision and human gesture, transforming Frida Kahlo’s portrait into a structured field of contrast, rhythm, and abstraction.
The composition is built from a binary pixel matrix in which each square functions simultaneously as image, information, and physical intervention. Up close, the viewer encounters a fragmented structure of geometric units. From a distance, the portrait emerges with remarkable clarity, revealing the same perceptual dynamics that define much of the artist’s mosaic and public art practice.
Frida Kahlo occupies a unique place within the artist’s body of work. Her image has appeared repeatedly throughout different periods and mediums, becoming a recurring subject through which questions of identity, cultural memory, and technological perception can be explored. This work extends that investigation through the language of contemporary stencil art.
The piece also maintains a direct relationship with public space. Variations of this same stencil have been installed in urban environments throughout Concón, Chile, including a mural created near the school attended by the artist’s children. In this way, the work exists simultaneously as a collectible artwork and as part of the visual fabric of everyday life, reinforcing the artist’s ongoing dialogue between street art and gallery practice.
