A landmark work in the evolution of the artist’s urban practice. While previous investigations focused on translating pixels into Venetian mosaic, Elvis Pixel Stencil represents the moment when the artist successfully transferred pixel-based construction into the language of contemporary street art.
The work was created using a proprietary stencil system developed after years of experimentation. Traditionally, pixelated stencils present a structural problem: individual square pixels detach from the stencil sheet during cutting, making accurate execution virtually impossible. To overcome this limitation, the artist devised an innovative method based on alternating pixel rows, allowing the image to remain structurally connected while preserving the visual integrity of the pixel.
For this portrait, the original image was first reduced to a four-tone composition. The visible colors were then separated digitally into independent layers and further divided into alternating stencil systems, resulting in a total of six individually cut stencils that required precise alignment during the painting process.
The technical complexity behind the work is largely invisible to the viewer. What appears to be a clean and minimal portrait of Elvis Presley is in fact the result of an elaborate process combining digital image analysis, color separation, stencil engineering, and urban painting techniques.
This same system later allowed the artist to expand his practice into large-scale public interventions, translating the pixel language from gallery spaces directly onto city walls. The image shown here was also executed in the public space, demonstrating the versatility and scalability of the process.
Beyond its technical innovation, the work reflects one of the recurring themes throughout the artist’s career: the transformation of cultural icons into contemporary pixel-based structures. Elvis becomes less a portrait and more a vehicle for exploring how information, memory, and image survive through reduction.
Today, Elvis Pixel Stencil stands as one of the foundational works in the development of the artist’s stencil methodology and an important bridge between digital aesthetics and street art.
